Audiobook narrator salary1/9/2024 I also agree that other people's success does not in any way reflect what my success will be. I also agree getting a minimum wage job would probably be easier and more immediately profitable, but that's not really an option since I need this to be something I can do at home. As for acting skills also none lol, which is why I would focus on the non fiction side at first since it doesn't require building different characters. I have not invested anything in this yet other than time researching it. Well existing setup and background are equal, zero. Too many variables without knowing your back story and your existing setup. I'm not trying to tell you not to do it, but the results others get rarely have anything to do with how another individual does at first. I've seen people earn EXCELLENT money in audiobooks, but they often are very serious about it, and most don't, just like almost every other biz on the planet. I've seen a few exceptions, but they are rare. You break even in your first year, you make some money your second, and beyond that if you're still around, you can make significant money. I have seen some who have related experience (acting, audio production experience, etc) who do much better than average the first six months, but I can count them on a few hands.įor most, audiobook production is like most other businesses. How's your existing setup? Do you have a well treated room to record in? A weak room will influence sales UNLESS you get lucky and find an author who has an existing following, and they overlook whatever weaknesses you have.Īs a side gig, good luck making better than $10-20 per hour on your first book or five during the first 6-12 months. I have some books that have paid over a thousand dollars per hour after a few years, and some that didn't make minimum wage. Most RS books average about $2-3 per copy of royalty income. (Nobody knows what they don't know at first.) You could cut the quality and do far less, but then sales often reflect that too. How many hours YOU will take to produce a book could be 3x higher or lower than someone else, or it could take you 5-10x more time. Most people would earn more short term money being a greeter at Walmart than their first book or ten, UNLESS they have some prior experience, relating to acting and/or audio production. Just because I have sold 10s of thousands of RS books, has nothing to do with how your results will match up. Do you have existing acting skills, narration/performance skills? Do you have audio production skills already in place? The results someone else gets are rarely going to match yours. (Although I don't hide behind some fake name either.)
